Zinc is called most important trace element

Perhaps the most important trace mineral for our human body is zinc. The mineral has a role in numerous biochemical processes including protein synthesis, the immune system, the cell division process and vision. For the men among us, the bluish metal is also good for sperm production and sperm quality.

The entire body contains about two to three grams of zinc, most of which is found in the large muscles. Here the essential trace element is quickly used up, so zinc stores must also be adequately replenished. Not wilfully, but agricultural development in recent decades has simply meant that our fruits and vegetables contain as much as 60% less vitamins and minerals than they did 20 years ago. Sources of zinc

Protein-rich foods are generally a rich natural source of zinc. Oysters in particular are very high in zinc but can also contain high levels of heavy metals. Red meat and crab and, to a slightly lesser extent, poultry and fish are also good sources. Vegetable foods are mainly whole grains, legumes, nuts (especially pecans) and seeds (especially pumpkin seeds). When cereals are refined, up to 80% of the zinc is lost, because zinc is mainly present in the husks and skins. Vegetables and fruits contain relatively little zinc. Lactovegetarians who eat a lot of legumes and nuts will only get just enough zinc. The amount of absorbable zinc may still be too low due to the many antinutrients of these foods. Thus, a strictly vegetarian diet generally provides too little zinc for the body.
