Vitamin D and vitamin K are important synergists: they reinforce each other in their action. Whereas vitamin D ensures normal levels of calcium in the blood, vitamin K ensures the absorption of calcium at the right place, namely in the bones

Both vitamins play important roles in many body processes. For example, vitamin K contributes to normal blood clotting and, like vitamin D, helps maintain strong bones. Vitamin D also helps maintain strong muscles and teeth and supports the immune system.

Why the combination of vitamin D and vitamin K?

Vitamin D and vitamin K are important synergists: they reinforce each other in their actions. Whereas vitamin D ensures normal levels of calcium in the blood, vitamin K ensures that calcium is absorbed in the right place - in the bones - rather than in undesirable places such as the kidneys or blood vessels.

In addition, vitamin D and vitamin K play important roles in many body processes. For example, vitamin K contributes to normal blood clotting and, like vitamin D, helps maintain strong bones. Vitamin D also helps maintain strong muscles and teeth and supports the immune system.

That it is challenging to make enough vitamin D is common knowledge. This applies not only to the dark days in the fall, but also in the spring and summer our body's own vitamin D production can fall short. Especially now that we are avoiding the sun more and more. We sit indoors a lot and when we get outside we wear sunglasses, sun-protective clothing and sunscreen. In the absence or avoidance of sunlight, vitamin D becomes essential. It then becomes necessary to supplement vitamin D by other means. We can get the sunshine vitamin from our diet, from fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel, liver and egg yolks. Unfortunately, the amount of vitamin D that can be provided through food is never as high as one's own production in the skin, and we struggle, often unknowingly, with vitamin D deficiencies.

A meta-analysis of scientific studies recently proved that it is useful to combine vitamin D supplementation with vitamin K because the two vitamins work together. Vitamin K can also be produced by the body itself. Our gut flora can produce vitamin K2 in the intestines. A non-optimal diet and too little exercise adversely affect the composition of our intestinal flora. The production of vitamin K is then lower than the daily requirement. Vitamin K is also found in the diet. Green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach and parsley are rich sources of vitamin K1. In the body, however, this form is relatively poorly absorbed. Vitamin K2, specifically menaquinone-7, is considered the most efficient source of vitamin K. This form is produced by certain bacteria and is found in limited amounts in meat, dairy and eggs. Partly for this reason, our bodies often fail to get enough vitamin K from our diet. A supplement can then offer a solution.
