What is vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin but stores in your body just like a fat-soluble vitamin. It is stored primarily in your liver. Your body cannot make vitamin B12 itself; you must get it from your diet. Vitamin B12 is mainly found in animal products such as meat, eggs and dairy products. If you are vegan or vegetarian, the Health Council recommends taking vitamin B12 supplements.
How do you absorb vitamin B12?
Absorption is a complex process and occurs through the gastrointestinal system. In the stomach, stomach acid dissociates vitamin B12 from food. The stomach also produces the substance intrinsic factor. Intrinsic factor couples to vitamin B12, allowing vitamin B12 to be absorbed into the body. Sufficient stomach acid production and proper intestinal function are important for vitamin B12 intake.
