The WHO has defined probiotics as: live microorganisms that have a positive effect on health when in consumed in sufficient quantities.

Usually probiotics are bacteria but health effects are also attributed to certain yeasts. Claimed positive effects include reducing intestinal and allergic symptoms or increasing immunity. There is not enough evidence for the health claims.
