Description

What is GABA?

An amino acid and is short for gamma-amino butyric acid. In food it is found in, among other things, green vegetables (such as broccoli), seeds, fresh nuts, potatoes and eggs.

It is an amino acid that functions as an "inhibitor," or an "inhibitory neurotransmitter" in the brain.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid is found in large quantities in the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is an area on the back of the brain that regulates instinctive functions, such as the cycles of sleep, body temperature and the activity of the pituitary gland. GABA is produced by the body from glutamate.

GABA neurotransmitter

Neurotransmitters are carriers of information in nerve pathways, passing information from one nerve cell to another. The most well-known neurotransmitters are dopamine, which among other things is important in the reward system in brain.

Adrenaline is part of the survival mechanism, acetylcholine acts on learning and memory and activates muscles, and serotonin affects mood. When a Gaba neurotransmitter (the key) comes in contact with a gaba receptor (the lock) it has an inhibitory effect.

What is a deficit?

As you age, your body makes less. Also, the GABA receptor function in your brain may no longer work properly. Symptoms for a deficiency include headaches, irritability, palpitations, anxiety and no desire for sex.
